Steel City Gig Guide – 15th-21st March!

Here at Sounds From The Steel, we believe Sheffield has one of the strongest live scenes in Blighty, so here’s the first of a new weekly feature giving you a week full of vital gigs, so you can soak up as many Sounds from the Steel as possible!

Thursday 15th March


@ The Green Room

Considered by many as one of the best emerging acts in the city, Best Friends unique brand of surf garage-pop is completely infectious. Having recently released a new EP, ‘Throwing Up’ on Art is Hard Records, expect to see a lot of these guys in the coming months. Thursday’s gig at The Green Room is also in aid of a Breast Cancer charity, so all the more reason to head down.

Friday 16th March


@ Motorpoint Arena

If there’s a better way to spend your Friday night than enjoying some classic Motown, then we’ll eat our hats at SFTS Towers! Legendary quartet The Four Tops will also be joined by The Temptations at the Motorpoint Arena this weekend. Saturday night sees a fantastic showcase of local talent at one of the cities best venues. The Alvarez Kings are rapidly becoming one of Sheffield’s most talked about exports, having taken their brand of regressive pop to the Texas SXSW and the Isle of Wight Festivals recently. They’re also supported by Driftun, whose edgy brand of electronic indie is definitely worth a listen. Having caught both bands at last years Tramlines, we can say that this is a must for the cream of local talent! Get tickets here.

Monday 19th March



They hype surround Chelmsford’s ‘The Milk’ right now is off the scale, and if you’re looking for a modern take on 1960’s Soul, then you should look to no udder, geddit?

After garnering rave reviews across the industry in 2011, The Milk ill undoubtedly be moving on to much bigger things, so there’s no excuse not to catch such an exciting young band in such an intimate venue.

Sounds From The Steel will be catching up with the band very soon, but to get a taste of ‘The Milk, make sure you head down to SOYO, on Rockingham Street on Monday night. The best part is, it’s completely free! Also on the bill are the Renegade Brass Band, The Gentlemen and Adam Kay.

Tuesday 20th March


@ The Tuesday Club, Sheffield University SU

Yorkshire’s own Rusko, or Christopher Mercer to his mother, brings more dubstep craziness to Sheffield’s premier student night @ The Tuesday Club. After enjoying great success with recent single, Somebody to Love, Rusko’s star is in the ascent, with future collaborations on the horizon with Hot Chip, Santigold and many more in the pipeline.
