Live Review: Such Gold & Apologies, I Have None @ Sheffield Corporation 04/05/12

The intimate backroom of Sheffield’s Corporation is packed to the rafters for the visit of Rochester New York’s Such Gold, part of their debut UK headline tour with Apologies I Have None.

Local openers Cutthroats are playing their first ever show tonight, and unfortunately it is extremely obvious. Having by their own admission thrown together this set in just a few days, their sludgy brand of down-tuned stoner riffs sound more like a jumble of ideas rather than songs. However, maximum effort is applied from the band, and with more practice they’ll surely improve.

London’s Apologies, I Have None, are a simply a class act. As their set begins, opening track ‘Sat in Vicky Park’ displays their fantastic brand of emotional indie punk, complete with piercing gang vocal interludes. Although seeming an odd choice of support for the tour, Apologies have no trouble in winning the Corporation crowd over, with set highlight coming in recent single Clapton Pond. These guys are definitely ones to watch in 2012.

Such Gold take to the stage to a somewhat subdued crowd. However this doesn’t last long, as their bouncy hardcore punk anthems such as Sycamore and Gut Rot sends those down front into a frenzy, as vocalist Ben Kotin jumps from the unnaturally high stage to a welcome of outstretched arms and screaming voices.

With the band on the verge of releasing debut full length, ‘Misadventures’, many new tracks are aired this evening, including the quite brilliant Storyteller. While maintaining their energetic punk melodies from previous release, ‘Pedestals’, Such Gold’s new material indicates a more mature and slightly heavier sound.

It’s a ridiculously tight performance, with intertwining guitar lines from Nate Derby and Skylar Sarkis note perfect at all times. While the hype has been building steadily for a while, it won’t be long until Such Gold are packing out much larger venues, and deservedly so.
