Single Review: Socrates Johnson – Thunder and Enlightening

Words: Tom Walton

Out Now

This self styled ‘blues rock’ quartet have been hiding on the Sheffield underground for a while.

But maybe now is the time for the band, with Thunder And Enlightening being a different beast to what has come before, seeing them leave behind a sound that catapulted Nessa and Bryn to the number one spot in 2009.

The improvement is vast and rather than clattering clumsily through one another, the dual vocals intertwine with ease while the pokey rockabilly drum beat and chugging guitars conjure images of chase scenes, pitchforks n’all.

The championing of the guitar is on the forefront of the current Sheffield scene and here Socrates Johnson show that they could climb the local ladder and beyond, but only with more of this intelligent, dynamic and sexy sound that draws on Dylan, death and war.

Happy? Nope. Worth 79p? Fuck yeah.
